Migraine – Causes, Symptoms and Treatment
Mar 04, 2018 Chapter 1
Migraine is known to be persistent, severe headache which is usually felt in the front or side of the head and causes discomforts like vomiting, nausea and light sensitivity. It usually lasts from 4 hours to 3 days. Migraines affect up to 20 million people in the United States.
Migraine can occur at any age but typically between the age of 10 and 40 and tend to lessen after the age of 50. Some persons experience several painful migraines a month while other people can only have a few migraines their whole life. There is more to migraine and in this article; we’ll take closer look at the causes of migraine, symptoms and possible prevention/treatment.
Let’s begin!
Studies show that the headaches are linked to the brain but the exact causes are not fully known. There are some cases of it being genetic in some people while other people have some abnormalities in some regions of their brain. Aside these, other possible causes include:
• Excessive fatigue
• Tension
• Changes in sleep patterns
• Menstrual periods
• Emotional Stress
• Caffeine. Excessive consumption of caffeine or even a sudden withdrawal from it could cause headaches when the caffeine level drops. Caffeine makes the blood vessels sensitized to it and whenever it isn't consumed, a headache could occur. This makes caffeine as an unusual treatment for migraine.
• Sensitivity to chemicals or food preservatives. Studies show that there are some foods, beverages, and additives that trigger up to 30% of migraines that occur.
• Change in weather conditions.
The pain migraine produces could be said to be throbbing or pounding. It starts as a dull ache and then gradually develops into a throbbing pain which could be aggravated by physical activities. Migraine is classified as mild, moderate or severe.
• Loss of appetite.
• Paleness
• Blurred vision
• Dizziness
• Fatigue
• Warm or cold sensations
• Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, stomach upset.
• Sensitivity to light, odors, and noise.
Treatment
For mild and moderate migraine, one can apply the following tips to manage the pains:
• Adequate sleep
• Reduction in stressful activities
• Resting in places that aren't surrounded by much sound, light, and odors.
• Headache medication
• Drinking caffeine moderately
• Placing pillows under the head or neck when laying down
• Applying a form of cold compress to the area that aches.
• Eating the right meal with essential vitamins.
In eating the proper foods with the right vitamins, you need to take supplements that are also rich in vitamins to make sure that your body absorbs what is required. Vitamins and minerals get absorbed into the body through the bloodstream and are transferred to various areas to perform certain functions. If your body is to recover from stress and certain issues it undergoes on a daily basis, you need to eat properly and take nutritional supplements.
