Half Full Of Regrets
May 01, 2018 Chapter 1
In the windy yet techy regions of the San Francisco Bay Area, everyone craves to make it into the big tech companies. This fantasy serenades the minds of countless computer engineers who are best poised for successful careers within such behemoth organizations.
Although Chloe was a high flying second-year computer engineering student, she never for once fancied the bay area as her attention was set on a single price; gain entry to the globally acclaimed biotech firm BioQuinox. Most of the groundbreaking innovations in cardiac rhythm auto-calibration and nano-oxide film deposition in blood vessels were achieved by highly efficient micro-teams within BioQuinox.
Chloe constantly researched and discussed the existing and prevailing biotechnological trends with her best friend and colleague Ruby. Ruby had the conventional mindset; finish your Stanford degree with amazing recommendations and internship experience, then proceed to get a job with a globally reputable technology firm like Linxx. Their somewhat symbiotic and complementary relationship continued throughout their bachelor's degree and just before their final year, tragedy struck.
Ruby's dad was diagnosed with a rare form of cerebral palsy, that although undetected all his life, gradually induced early signs of Alzheimer and reduced motor functions while still in his early 40's. The news was so devastating that Ruby chose to defer her admission a year to go support the family through this period.
As her father's condition kept growing worse, Ruby never failed to keep Chloe informed of the latest happenings via texts or phone calls, albeit in-between tears. She was gradually losing her father and there was nothing current medicine could do to stop it. One chilling evening, they received an August visitor; it was Chloe.
She had come straight from college to see and grief with her best friend and her family. The atmosphere was worse than she expected, everything had been adjusted to make their home wheelchair conducive, the stairs had wheel paths, the dining was missing a chair etc. With a grim smile on her face, she hugged her friend in total silence and as she expected, Ruby broke down in tears on her shoulder in the presence of both her parents and without saying a word, the duo proceeded upstairs to the room.
Upon getting to the room, Ruby mentioned to Chloe how the doctors mentioned how certain age-induced genetic markers were triggered by some environmental or bodily biological reactions, leading to his nervous system shutting down most functions. Affirmatively, Chloe responded, "Things would certainly have been different if such genetic markers had been identified and eliminated or replaced while he was a kid." "How many months did the doctor's give him?" She asked. "6 months and we have 2 months to go". Then the sobbing resumed heavily.
Little do they know that this idea would be the precipice of a billion-dollar war that would transform both ladies to arch enemies.
