Pets Health – Resistance to Flea/Heartworm Preventatives
Jun 09, 2018 Chapter 1
Pets usually suffer fleas and heartworm diseases. These diseases tend to affect the general performance of the pet, especially as it concerns its social relations. This article will consider some of these diseases in some detail, as well as recommend measures of pet resistance to;
Heartworm Disease – one major carrier of the heartworm are mosquitoes. Infected mosquitos bite your dog or cat and infest them with the heartworm larva that lives just under your pet's skin. Larvae invade the bloodstream of your pet and they continue to grow and develop. Typically, by the time your pet begins to show signs of heartworm disease, the disease has already eaten deep into the fabric of your pet’s life, as it would be in its advanced stage. Based on the above, we recommend that you give your pet a yearly heartworm test and follow that up with year-round heartworm prevention.
Heartworm Prevention – Heartgard Plus would always make the list as the first choice for heartworm prevention in dogs. Its usual dosage is once a month; it is a chewable preventive medication. Heartgard Plus act also as preventative for heartworm disease and also treats (and that’s an added advantage) and controls roundworms and hookworms in pets. There is also Advantage Multi is the first drug that gains our recommendation in the treatment of the disease in cats. Advantage multi comes with a number of advantages. It is best if it is administered once a month. It is the best solution for preventing heartworm disease. It kills adult fleas, ear mites and is the best treatment and control for hookworms and roundworms.
Flea Prevention and Control
The most common way that your pet can catch fleas is through contact with flea-infested animals such as a stray dog or cat, a neighbor's pet, raccoon, opossum or other urban wildlife. The female flea usually lays eggs that develop into adults and jump on your pet, ultimately causing an infestation in your home. Insects tend to be an inactive search for hosts when the air temperature is just above freezing, which means your pet needs your protection for more than just the warm months. If you have a flea infestation in your home, the best line of defense is your protected pet! Treat your pet like it should be treated. This will make it less likely to be infested.
As for dogs, their lifestyle accounts for their fleas and heartworm diseases. If you take your dog to wooded areas or areas with high grass, you can expect to find a tick on your dog at some point during his/her life. Ticks hang on tall grass, brush, or shrubs and wait for a host to walk by them. Ticks can live well over a year without feeding. However, every tick expects to be hosted at some point in their life. Taking your dog to flea infested environments is to open it to their attacks.
Flea Prevention – for the treatment and prevention of fleas it is recommended that only a few products for flea and tick prevention based on your pet's lifestyle.
Frontline Plus is a once a month, topical preventative and treatment it is recommended for dogs. Frontline Plus kills live fleas and ticks on your pet, as well as flea eggs and larvae. This leaves your pet safe.
NexGard is a once a month oral treatment and preventative for dogs. NexGard works by stimulating the fleas' nervous system, killing 100% of them within 24 hours and continues to protect for a full 30 days.
Frontline TriTrak is a once a month, topical treatment and preventative recommended for dogs. It is Merial's fastest working product and acts in minutes. It starts killing fleas and ticks in just 5 minutes so that they have less time to bite. It also kills flea eggs and larvae, too. And, this makes the problem of fleas nipped in the bud.
There is no doubt that the best you can do for your pet is to provide it with balanced nutrition. Apart from this, your pet needs exercise, grooming, preventive care and vaccines to stay healthy. Remember, a healthy pet could be the reason for many healthy smiles.
